The first of the two planned DLC episodes for Final Fantasy XVI, Echoes of the Fallen was announced and released during The Game Awards. There’s not much to say, but if you enjoyed the main story of Final Fantasy XVI, chances are that you were looking forward to more of it, so this announcement was a sweet surprise to all the fans.

This DLC episode is about two hours long and takes place during the endgame, with its quest unlocked after the player completes the side quests "Where There's a Will" and "Priceless". It has some story attached to it, adding some context to events of the game, and it has several nice character interactions, although nothing particularly meaty.

While there aren’t any new overworld locations introduced with it, it features a new dungeon with a few new enemies and a new boss. The final boss of the DLC is a nice fight with some very cool moments, and in general, while the dungeon reuses a lot of enemies, it adds a few new mechanics to the mix that should keep the entire run fresh and enjoyable.

The DLC's quest is around two hours long, and while I’d say it justifies its price, it’s definitely the appetizer to the second DLC episode, which should be more story-focused, have new locations, and feature a big Eikonic fight. Regardless of whether you play it now or wait to play both of them together, I think if you enjoyed the base game and the interactions of the party, it’s certainly a short but nice extra to play through.
